Members of Altrusa tutor at local public schools and the Literacy Council of Garland County where we also provide funding for educational materials.

The Literacy Council of Garland County recently presented an “Unsung Hero” award at its recent recognition banquet to Altrusa International of Hot Springs Village, AR, Inc.  The Club was honored for the donations and services it has provided to the Council over the past year.

Finally, Altrusans cooked and served the dinner at the Annual Literacy Council Recognition Banquet.  An event that rewards those students that succeeded in reading and writing.

Other Literacy Projects

ASO Children’s Concert

As well as our direct participation through tutoring, we support the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Children’s Concert in Hot Springs in an effort to bring classical music to young students and to show them the connections between music and history. Music in a young person’s life has shown to be a great motivator toward scholastic achievement.

Make a Difference Day

Dictionary Project

In 2017 to honor “Make A Difference Day” the Club distributed about 225 age-appropriate dictionaries to third graders at three elementary schools in the area. Sometimes these dictionaries are the only hard copy books students have every had to call their own.

HSV Community Projects

Keep Hot Springs Village Beautiful

Keep Hot Springs Village Beautiful Day is an Hot Springs Village community event that occurs three times a year when all the Village service clubs participate.  Each club is assigned a stretch of road to pick up trash.  We usually meet at 8:30 am and are finished with our mile of road in a few hours.  It’s good exercise while doing community service!

Village Loan Closet

We volunteer to help keep the Village Loan Closet open one to two days each month.  The Village Loan Closet loans medical equipment to village residents at no charge other than donations to this 501(c)(3) organization.

Jessieville and Mountain Pine High Schools Career Days

In 2018, 242 students from Jessieville were eligible to attend presentations from about 20 speakers in six career clusters.

We expanded this program to include Mountain Pine in the Spring of 2014. In 2018, four speakers spoke with 37 high school sophomores about their respective profession.

Careers ranged from auto mechanics to registered nurses; from veterinarians to wild life officers -- and many in between.

4.0 GPA Student Scholarship Recognition Luncheon

Our 4.0 GPA Student Recognition Luncheon has proven a great success in motivating students to achieve higher grades. The number of qualifying students in five area high schools has risen over 250% since we started rewarding our brightest students in 2006; from 40 to 100+ in 2018.

Book Box Project

In recent years, we provided Book Boxes to two shelters.  We fill the “boxes” with books and magazines that may be borrowed or kept.  We keep the supply replenished as they are used and plan adding more “boxes” to other shelters in the future.

Our fundraiser this year was called “Fall into Fun” and was a great success.  We served homemade soup, salad and a sampling of deserts.  We were entertained with music during lunch, followed by time for participants to play their favorite game.  We had our popular and successful Silent Auction again this year which featured items donated by local merchants and individuals.
